MobiTV Names Mobile Media Veteran Chief Technology Officer
Kay Johansson Joins the Leading Mobile TV Provider to Drive Innovations in Service Delivery Over Next Generation Networks
EMERYVILLE, CA – August 14, 2006 – MobiTV, Inc., the global leader in television and digital radio services for cellular, WiFi and broadband enabled devices, today announced the appointment of Kay Johansson as Chief Technology Officer (CTO). Johansson will drive the creation, development and deployment of mobile television technologies on mobile devices and PCs over the broad array of networks. Johansson joins MobiTV from Popwire, a former Ericsson company, in Sweden where he served as CTO for the last six years, where he led the licensing, product strategy and development of mobile and broadcast media applications and technologies. Popwire's customers include Apple Computer, ABC, MTV, BBC, CTIA, Ericsson, Microsoft, Vodafone, 3 and other industry leaders.
“Kay clearly understands the mobile video landscape and has the vision to expand MobiTV's technology and infrastructure base across all of the latest networks,” said Dr. Phillip Alvelda, CEO, co-founder and chairman of MobiTV. “Kay's experience working with leading carriers, mobile equipment manufacturers and personal computing companies is the perfect fuel for the next generation of products that will drive MobiTV's business.”
Johansson has extensive experience building media delivery solutions from server to handset. While at Popwire, Johansson and his team were instrumental in designing an end-to-end media streaming infrastructure that is the core of Ericsson’s media delivery system. In 2000 Popwire, together with Ericsson, launched the first official television broadcast over a 3G network. Johansson is co-inventor of two patents for streaming and bandwidth adaptation techniques over wireless networks submitted by Popwire that were instrumental in the delivery of a standards-based 3GPP media player for mobile phones and PCs. Prior to joining Popwire Johansson has held several key positions within the broadcast industry focusing on digital technologies.
“Media for consumers today goes far beyond the living room, and looking toward the next set of networks, we see a clear path for consumers to have exactly the media they want when they want it,” said Kay Johansson. “MobiTV will continue to offer fun and compelling services to consumers that seamlessly span networks, devices and form factors as new technologies such as WiMAX and 4G are adopted by carriers.”
Johansson has relocated from Sweden to California and reports directly to MobiTV’s CEO, Dr. Phillip Alvelda.
